Strategy & Innovation

Context

Our idea focused on using decentralized finance to shift farm practices and lead farm standards towards climate positive futures in order to rebuild soil health, ensure protection of land, sequester carbon, and most importantly raise revenue for small scale farmers.

With my background in sustainability and my diverse teammates skills and background in UI/UX, food, and new technology we were able to come up with an integrated idea. Leaning on the experiences of one teammate coming from a family of farmers, we leaned into the problem space.

Our team won the pitch competition at the end of the semester.

Challenge

We were tasked with coming up with a project that included innovations from the field of decentralized finance in order to solve a real world problem in our interest area.

The Ask: How Can We Use Decentralized Finance To Change the World?

In this course, we were asked a large question. How might we successfully build a platform that uses modern decentralized finance capabilities in useful ways. Our team took this to mean, how might we change the world with this up and coming technology?

A goal of this famous ID course is to teach methods of innovation and teamwork to apply our practice of innovation in a new and profound way. We applied this knowledge of the 10 Types of Innovation framework in order to set up our idea for success, then we worked on building ideas and assets to tell our story. Below are images from initial ideation when thinking about the complex system, policies, capital, and stakeholders involved.

Process: 10 Types of Innovation

We spent the first part of our project iterating on our idea of bringing together farming, sustainability, and decentralized finance. We practiced thinking about various stakeholders to bring in, partners to reach out to, and types of innovation we need to think about - like profit model, product system, and customer engagement to name a few.

Our Solution: Regenerative Agriculture As a Win Win

Regrow is a crave-worthy fruit snack that utilized its platform to connect farmers, who face the impacts of climate change, directly to capital and customers. By digitizing the process, we enable capital to farmers so they can expand their infrastructure improvements, enhance regenerative agriculture practices, and ensure they maintain control of their business.

Results: Our Product + Presentation

Above: Prototypes being presented to a panel of consultants, and classmates. I crafted these prototypes myself with fully compostable packaging, labels, and ink. We were able to collect the opened samples at the end of the presentation in order to compost them properly.
